Just outside the east and south sides

Look at the walking route, not the straight-line distance. A hotel that appears 400 metres away may involve a gate, a slope, or a route that feels much longer with bags.
Fountain Square and central Baku
This suits travelers who want restaurants, evening life, and a more conventional city-hotel experience. You can walk to Icherisheher, but the Old City is a destination rather than your front doorstep. This area is usually the better fit for visitors who want nightlife and broad restaurant choice more than medieval atmosphere.
Waterfront and Boulevard side
The waterfront can be pleasant for a longer stay or a quieter modern base, but do not book it assuming every hotel is a quick walk from the Old City. Check the actual route and the summer heat. The map may show a neat line; your feet will receive the unedited version.
The luggage and gate reality
Ask the hotel three specific questions before booking: Which gate or street should a taxi use? Is the final approach paved and step-free? Will staff meet a late arrival if the vehicle cannot stop outside the entrance?
Save the hotel's Azerbaijani address, phone number, and a map pin offline. “Old City” is not a complete pickup instruction. If you are arriving by taxi, ask to be dropped at the nearest permitted vehicle point, then follow the hotel's walking directions. A driver stopping at the edge of the reserve is normal, not a personal betrayal.
For departure, ask reception to arrange the pickup time and confirm whether the car can reach the entrance. With one small bag, this is easy. With two suitcases and a child who has decided that walking is now an insult, it matters.
Arriving from Heydar Aliyev International Airport
The airport's official transport guidance lists Aero Express, ridesharing services including Uber, Bolt, and Yango, and the official Baku Taxi service. Pickup areas are outside the terminal exits at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Use the outdoor signs and do not follow the first person offering a “special” ride in the arrivals hall.
Aero Express runs from the airport to Baku Railway Station at 28 May, with a published travel time of about 30 minutes, subject to traffic and weather. The official airport page says buses run every 20 minutes from 06:00 to 23:15 and every 45 minutes overnight. From 28 May, continue by taxi or metro and walk the final part only if your hotel gives a genuinely simple route.
Public transport uses a BAKU CARD, available from terminals near the bus stops outside the terminal exits. The airport's current fare page lists 1.30 AZN for an Aero Express trip and lower published fares for ordinary bus and metro journeys. Check whether the property has an elevator, the room faces a busy lane, reception operates overnight, and air conditioning is included. A charming old building can be memorable.
